No. 20

A few months back, MMM reviewed a new cd release by a Maryland band called Dali's Watch. One of their tunes caught my attention and I've been wanting to take a look at this band further in depth. This month I'll tell you more about them. Dali's Watch is the creation of songwriter/guitarist Mic Wynne, who some of you may know from his past work in the band Disease Within. Mic has been working the music scene in Maryland for many years now and with the inception of Dali's Watch, has created something a heavy grunge rock sound that is a bit progressive and experimental. It can be described as being different, unique, a refreshing change from the usual pool of oversaturated genres pumping out album after album of the same sounding releases.

In October 2014, Ravenhurst Records released the debut cd by Dali's Watch called Breakfast Serial and it is widely available through retailers and streaming services such as iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, XBox Music, Shazam, Sony Music, Google Play, and more. Dali's Watch are currently getting airlplay worldwide. Dali's Watch is taking great risks with a truly unique sound, a masterful creation of heavines, a collision of fusion, progressive and grunge. The 2014 release of the full-length album, "Breakfast Serial" is an eclectic mix of heavy rock with complex, yet approachable timing changes, haunting and beautiful melodies, and dynamics that go from subtle acoustic passages to in your face, pounding rhythms. The band consists of three very experienced and talented musicians, who have written eleven songs that are memorable, with meaningful lyrics, catchy choruses, and certainly several commercially marketable songs in 'Without a Whisper,' 'Ghosts of the Past' and 'Ray of Light.' The heavy, grungy song 'Blissful Ignorance' rocketed to number one in the rock charts on numberonemusic, within days of release, remained there for weeks, and media reviews are rating the release with near perfect scores. Dali's Watch is unique, refreshing, something interesting, and it keeps you coming back for more.

Dali's Watch consists of members Mic Wynne - guitars, vocals, and keys; Gary Venable - percussion; and Mike Galway - bass guitars. Mic Wynne is a composer, producer, who has been involved in multiple rhythm, blues, and pop recording sessions including Disease Within's album Killing Time and its Eastern US Tour in 2009. Gary Venable was involved in Apothecary's albums Apothecary (2006), Not Just Loud (2009), and That's What You Get For Talking (2014), the Blues Rambler's Life Goes On (2014), and was drummer for Doug and the Cyclones, featuring Doug Yancy of Molly Hatchet and Robin Trower fame. He has also toured in the Midwest, Japan, and the Virgin Islands with the band Curios. Mike Galway was involved with Uncle Gut on the albums Uncle Gut (1999), Uncle Gut Live at Orion (2000), Uncle Gut II (2000), and Fat 50 (2001). He was involved with Cerebus Effect on the albums Dark Matter (2002) and Acts of Deception (2005). Mike was involved in albums by Jeremy Cubert titled From A To B (2000), Pete Laremee titled Alone But Not Lonely (2002), Zapotec titled Not Of Sound Mind (1995) and Alfa Century (1998), Archaic Revival titled Live In Georgetown (2004), Dysfunctional Family titled Dysfunctional Family (2001), and Intentional Trainwreck titled The Accident (2014). Mike was also involved in the Apothecary albums titled Apothecary (2006), Not Just Loud (2009), and That's What You Get For Talking (2014).

Dali's Watch is a Rockville Maryland based heavy rock band with complex timings and a grungy heavy feel. Their style is hard to pin down but is best described as alternative/progressive/experimental/grungy hard rock. The music is hard hitting at times, yet beautiful and dynamic, with acoustics, cellos, and orchestra colliding with distorted guitars. While their music is very complex in time signatures and changes, it is brilliantly written and executed such that the average listener hardly notices. Like Rush, this is a significant accomplishment. The songs are catchy and get stuck in your head, and appeal to a broad audience from rhythm and blues to metal heads. The lyrics are often social commentary, or deeper emotional journeys, allowing multiple interpretations and a deep connection with the listener. Their debut album centers around the media obsession with the macabre, where news broadcast is a plethora of death and tragedy.

Dali's Watch was formed in 2012 with Mic Wynne (guitars/keys/vocals), Mike Galway (bass), and Gary Venable (percussion). All of the members are seasoned musicians with many bands, projects, sessions, CDs and tours under their belts. Each has played in a diverse set of styles, including rock, fusion, jazz, country, blues, and classical. All of the members are also formally trained musicians with decades of experience with their instruments. For their debut release, Mic Wynne wrote the lyrics and guitars for eleven songs, and the band then worked to refine his arrangements, and added bass and drums. The drums were recorded in 2013 at Drew Mazurek's studio, and then guitars, bass and vocals were recorded in 2013/2014 at Dogland Studios. Mic then added the finishing production elements at Dogland, with draft mixes, and Drew Mazurek provided the final mix and mastering. Their debut album, "Breakfast Serial," was released by Ravenhurst Records in December of 2014 and is available on compact disc (CD) and mp3 (digital) through major retailers. "Breakfast Serial" began in 2012, originally envisioned as a sequel to the highly acclaimed Disease Within "Killing Time" release in 2009; a mix of complex progressive and thrash metal. But with the music taking a new direction, and new band members on bass and drums, the band created their own identity, and Dali's Watch was born. The band is best described as adverse if not eclectic mix of grungy hard rock, with touches of classic 70s sounds, progressive, and alternative. The debut album is an epic journey through timing and dynamic shifts, seamlessly woven together in a fine fabric with haunting melodies, multilayered harmonies, and a pounding rhythm section. The music weaves a story of a mind plagued by the images of crime, death and despair on every morning news broadcast; the media obsession with the macabre. The album is sure to be a hit with anyone who appreciates heavy rock with beautifully crafted songs and lyrics that have meaning. It is music that breaks free from the norm, and the masses to forge new territory in a sound and style all of its own.
