Devin Townsend Project - Z2 (Hevy Devy) ....

Devin Townsend has released the anticipated Z2 album, the return of Ziltoid The Omniscient. The followup is much more theatrical that the first, more like a musical, complete with a cast of characters played by guests Dominique Lenore Persi of Stolen Babies, Chris Jericho of Fozzy, Y2J, and Anneke who was part of the Z1 album. For those not familiar with this project, it is a musical piece with narrations telling the story of the character Ziltoid. Devin includes a choir and symphony which he utilizes to its potential on Z2. "Ziltoidian Empire" and "Ziltoid Goes Home" are full of energy, attack, and technicality. "From Sleep Awake" was one of my favorites and probably the best track on the album. Dominique's voice and style layers smoothly in this whirlwind of "War Princess". The album was just released Oct 28th and the label is offering several versions of the album, including another Z2 without the narration. Devin's Ziltoid project is certainly one of the most interesting things I've listened to Go pick up Z1 and Z2 for your collection.

Obituary - Inked in Blood (Relapse) ....

Obituary return with Inked in Blood, their first album in five years. This time around the group took to a Kickstarter campaign to fund their latest release and obtained that goal of $10,000. I was excited waiting for this new release but have to say it ended up disappointing me. Not that is was bad, but that it wasn't better. Terry Butlers bass is loud and in your face on this album, but long time bassist Frank Watkins was missed. Kenny Andrews who plays second guitar to Trevor Peres, certainly doesn't bring anything to the band like Allen West once did. The first half of the album is riddled with recycled riffs from the past 15 years of the bands recordings and it is the same old stuff. The second half of the album however delivers some pleasers with songs such as "Deny You", "Within a Dying Breed", Out of Blood", and Paralyzed By Fear". The new album Inked in Blood is better than their last few albums, but doesn't come close to being as good as The End Complete or World Demise. I was disappointed.

Scar Symmetry - The Singularity (Phase 1) .... (Nuclear Blast)

Scar Symmetry have delivered the first in a trilogy series titled The Singularity, based on an apocalyptic sci-fi concept about artifical intelligence. Phase 1 - NeoHumanity is progressive metal, merged with melodic death metal and a little power metal. "Limits To Infinity”, "Cryonic Harvest", "The Spiral Timeshift", "Necromancer", and "Technocalyptic Cybergeddon" are powerful, driving songs that pull you into the concept. This is one of those albums that really grows on you, the more you listen to it. There are catchy choruses, heavy ass riffs, and the layering of styles will draw your interest. I found the power metal style they blend in to be a bit boring, they could tone that down, but f this is a sign of what is to come on the rest of the trilogy, there should be much anticipation.
